Oh yes! You read that right, O, Best-Beloveds. It's [livejournal.com profile] hc_bingo Time! Last year I kicked that puppy to the curb (and then comforted it) with 16 fills. I don't know how I'll do this year, but I've already filled a square two squares and will have fills for at least two more by the end of the summer. \o/

I love this challenge so much.

Here's my card! And seriously, this is one of the least-stressful challenges ever. You can take part every year even if you never fill a square, and you have an entire year to write/make anything. It's awesome. :D And I love H/C like kittens, so it just makes me really, really happy.

Here's my card:

shipwrecked caught in a robbery Hugs arena Accidental Mating for Life
Magical Trouble washing / bathing someone Stockholm syndrome forced to rely on enemy / rival Unwanted Transformation
Forced to Face Fear Dub-Con WILD CARD Healers culture shock
Protecting / Losing Precious object Person Motion Sickness De-Age Toothache Atonement
prostitution skeletons in the closet Captivity Blood Loss arrest

Look at all that wonderful torment. :D

Tomorrow evening, my dear Flisties, you'll be able to find me staging a Twitter Takeover with my good buddy and partner in crime [livejournal.com profile] sgamadison. We'll be using the @dreamspinners account between 7 and 9 pm Eastern time (That's 6 and 8 Central). We'll be answering questions and discussing our books, and I'd love to see some of you there. :D

The other animals are were-dinosaurs. Specifically, seven lines of my current WIP novel, which I've lovingly given the working title of 'Gay Were-Dinosaurs of the Pseudo Amish Apocalypse'. I was tagged by [livejournal.com profile] brumeier, to take seven lines from the seventh page of a current WIP. So here ya go, a perfect two paragraphs:

The other end of the chain on the crazy hybrid's ankle was attached to one of the exposed metal supports in the crumbling concrete wall that surrounded the village. The enclosure for the hybrids used the wall as one side. The rest of the rectangle was made of nothing sturdier than thick pieces of wood. The fact that the two unchained hybrids hadn't leapt over the fence or broken it down and slaughtered every single person in the village was only because they were too weak to do it.

Kai sneered in disgust and allowed himself the soft growl that wanted to escape from his throat. He'd be the first to agree that the hybrids were horrifically destructive and the most dangerous land-animal on what was left of the planet, but they didn't deserve to be treated like this. This was torture by neglect.

And I'm tagging seven more:

Pretty much all of us know what February 14 is, but did you know that February 15th is International Fanworks Day?

Well, you do now! And if you don't, or hate clicking links (it could happen), IFD is a creation of the Organization for Transformative Works, who are the lovely people who gave us the Archive of Our Own, among many other things. But currently relevant to my interests is their IFD Drabble Challenge.

The rules are simple: On February 15, post a drabble/drawble/short vid/another media format about your favorite character(s) getting fannish over something. Because of course they would. Does Draco Malfoy secretly ship Snarry? Does Clint Barton admire Oliver Queen? (I'm sure they'd totally be bros.)

I've got a drabble all set to go, and so does my buddy [livejournal.com profile] brumeier. I hope you guys will play too. And if you do, please comment here with a link so I can read it.

Come on, FListies! Write about your beloved characters as the fangirls and boys we all know they secretly are. I'll love you eleventy (which is far greater than three).

In other words, Hurt/Comfort Bingo time, y'all!

Now, much as I totally adore H/C (seriously, I love it like kittens), last year I was only able to fill three squares of my card. Alas, I did not get a bingo.

I'm a little more sanguine this year, because I've already filled my first square, and will hopefully have my second square filled by Monday. I'm feeling pretty good about this, guys. Comfortable, even, as opposed to hurt. Heh.

And here's my card. (You notice the convenient links in the square(s), right? Right?)

Abandonment Issues blood loss Suicide Attempt bites Possession / Mind Control
Invisibility restrained hunger / starvation time travel gone wrong On The Run
branding poltergeist WILD CARD (Comfort Item) Telepathic Trauma Purgatory
pandemics and epidemics Captivity dystopia Forced Soulbonding Clones
Bruises Electrocution Taking Care of Somebody Grief Forced to Hurt Somebody

I got my new [livejournal.com profile] hc_bingo card (do-dah; do-dah). It looks promising. And painful.

Here! It's under here! )

I have an idea that would fill the 'pneumonia' prompt, as well as two other prompts from different challenges, but my heart is with my original novels-in-progress at the moment. I would also love to be able to work all 25 prompts into one story, but the 'magical trouble' doesn't quite fit. ('Difficult pregnancy' might be a problem as well, come to think of it.)

I'm sure that once again I won't have anything finished before the point-less (but not pointless, heh) amnesty period, but this will be fun anyway. And if I'm really lucky, maybe I'll be inspired to write something that gets published. YOU NEVER KNOW.

(My previous two cards are here for 2011 and here for 2012.)

It's almost the end of May, and that means it's time for fanfic with a liberal dose of angst, misery, h/c and delirium. In other words: Spring Fever, my friends. Or as [livejournal.com profile] ariadnes_string calls it:

RUNNING HOT III: HOTTER THAN EVER

Come on over and leave a prompt or find a prompt and write a fic! Any and all fandoms welcome, as long as you like it hot.

Hello, and happy Wednesday (or 'hump day' as some of you like to call it).

Last week I posted my own Next Big Thing blog, and now I'm passing it along to my next blog hoppers.

[livejournal.com profile] wpadmirer is talking about her mystery novel Florida is Burning here. I've been lucky enough to be able to read some of it. I'm really enjoying the characters and how tangible Florida is in the story. And yes, the burning of the title is quite real.

[livejournal.com profile] laylalawlor has a comic novel called Freebird, which is here. It's about Alaska now and in the 1970s, which sounds as ambitious as it is unique and fascinating.

[livejournal.com profile] dungeonwriter is going to talk about a spec script she's working on. I'll have the link to that as soon as possible. It's here. :)

Enjoy the links. And thank you very much for reading!

Cover for BHT

Recently, I was invited to do a blog hop by Sara Madison (my post about the blog hop is here). Now it's my turn to answer some questions about my most recent work, which happens to be the novel up there with the beautiful cover by Reese Dante (artist's link is NSFW)..

I am incredibly excited to finally have a published novel. :D The book will be available in January and should be up on Dreamspinner Press's Upcoming Books Page soon.

(Here's my Dreamspinner Author's Page.)

What is the title of your book? Black Hawk Tattoo

What genre does your book fall under? Contemporary M/M Romance

What is the synopsis of your book? This is the official synopsis from Dreamspinner:

Toronto artist Gabriel Navarro splits his time between slinging ink and working on his master's degree. He's sure of his beliefs and his artistic integrity and naïve enough to think he'll never compromise—until Iraq war veteran Jake MacLean shows up in his tattoo parlor.

Overcome with anger and survivor's guilt, Jake is locked in a struggle to atone for sins he's sure will never be forgiven. Desperate to get his life back on track and with nowhere else to go, he moves in with his sister in Toronto. He doesn't expect to fall for Gabe.

Black Hawk Medevac resize

Though Jake's refusal to talk about what happened in Iraq frustrates Gabe, accepting Jake's claims that he's "fine" is easier than dealing with the truth. But pretty soon it's clear Jake can't control his panic attacks, and his condition is worsening. If Gabe can't help him face his demons, Jake is headed for a crash—and there's every chance he'll take Gabriel down with him.

More questions under here! )

Thank you for reading. :) Now the Next Big Thing hop goes to [livejournal.com profile] dungeonwriter who is writing a spec television script, my good friend the playwright and mystery novelist [livejournal.com profile] wpadmirer, and [livejournal.com profile] laylalawlor, who will be talking about her latest comic. They'll be posting on December 5. Please go check them out. :) And please make sure you check out Sara Madison's blog if you haven't already, because not only did she let me know about this in the first place, she also happens to be working on something pretty nifty and has been published more often than I have. And she's a great person, too. (I've also borrowed the idea of using pictures from her, because that was cool.)
taste_is_sweet: (Ride 'Em!)
Hey, everybody! And Happy Thanksgiving to my FListies about to celebrate it.

Next week I'm going to take part in a Blog Hop, which is basically a nifty way for people to follow links from blog to blog (or journal to journal) and find out about new writers. I was asked to take part by the lovely and talented [livejournal.com profile] sgamadison, who starts this part of the hop here on her handsomely-decorated (pun somewhat intended) and nicely readable website. She's responding to a series of questions, such as where the idea for her novel came from, what it's about and which actors she might chose to play the novel characters in a movie rendition. I'll be answering the same question near the end of the month.

[livejournal.com profile] sgamadison is also known as Sarah Madison, and, in my opinion, is an impressively prolific published author considering what I know of her day job. She has several publications with Dreamspinner Press, and you can see her author's page here.

(And mine is here.)

Now, in order to continue the blog-hop properly, I'm looking for five people who are working on a writing project (or who have just completed a writing project the way I have), who would like to answer some questions on their own LJ or other blog (or both! Why not?) and then pass it on (you don't need to have exactly five people, by the way. Even one other person would be great). Interested? Please leave a comment. :)

I'll have some big news to go with my jump of the hop, so I hope you'll come back to read it. :D
taste_is_sweet: (Imagination Movers!)
And it's been over two months since I last posted, apparently. Oops.

Anyway! Here's my brand new [livejournal.com profile] hc_bingo card. I'm really happy with some of the prompts, though I have absolutely nothing in mind for any of them at the moment. I'm open for suggestions. :)

My last year's bingo card is here, if anyone's interested. Overall, I was quite happy with what I was able to come up with.

And here's my new one:

Tentacles body/mindswap alien abduction dystopia amnesia
Apocalypse nightmares heat stroke stalkers poisoning
Theft major illness WILD CARD cursed arrest
Body Image Issues dub-con sex pollen abuse kidnapping
Insomnia parting ways bites love spell / potion gone wrong bruises

One of the many things I love about fandom. Go check it out, and don't be afraid to ask for something. I'm very lucky that there's not much I need--for the moment--but I know I'll be asking for something soon enough, here or elsewhere.

The marvelous [livejournal.com profile] mific chose five of my icons for me to talk about. If you'd like to play, go ahead and leave a request in the comments. :D

Here we go:

Fallen Angel Icon

This gorgeous picture was made by [livejournal.com profile] nightingaledies and is a detail from a larger digital painting. The fact that the broken angel is Sheppard from Stargate: Atlantis made the icon that much sadder and especially appealing. Incidentally, I started using the icon for this post, which actually has nothing to do with angels.

Shades of Grey Icon

I made this one in Photoshop Elements 7. I used a screencap of Sheppard from the Doppelganger episode where he believes McKay's died, because I love the eloquence of his devastated expression. I didn't end up with anything I liked enough to use for wallpaper, but I think it makes a pretty cool icon.

Pills Icon

Made by [livejournal.com profile] ileliberte. I love using this one for discussions about medical things and/or illegal substances. :)

Name that Poultry Icon

Another icon I made. I really love this one, especially for how it makes no sense without the context. It's actually a quote from a season two episode of Deadliest Warrior, which pitted an American SWAT team against their German counterparts GSG9. During the episode we found out that part of the GSG9 training includes toughening up the greenie by making them kill a chicken. But you don't just kill the chicken. First, you have to name that chicken. And spend some time with it.

I know you had to be there, but trust me; in context it was absolutely hilarious.

Being Vague Icon

Made by moira_faeii (though either I'm spelling her name incorrectly or she's not on LJ anymore), using a design from a t-shirt company whose name I can't remember. It still makes me smile every time I read it, because it's almost as fun as doing this other thing.
taste_is_sweet: (Nom You)
(Gakked from the marvelous [livejournal.com profile] alyse.)

This meme is awesome:

Go look at your blog journal. Find the last Fandom-related thing you posted. The characters in that post are now your team-mates in the Zombie Apocalypse. How fucked are you?

Well, it depends. If we're talking the actual fandom I'm part of, then it would be the Stargate: Atlantis fanfic I wrote for [livejournal.com profile] ariadnes_string's Fever Commentfic Meme. (There are more SGA prompts on the last two comment pages, btw--we need fills, my sister SGA fans!)

If I can count that one, then I'll have Team Sheppard behind me and we're going to kick undead ass, no problem. BRING IT ON, AGENTS OF THE APOCALYPSE!

However, if by 'fandom' it means, 'any media that either already is a fandom or could be one', then the last post I made would be the one I made about the stereotypes in the new Alphas show on SyFy, and while I suppose it'd be cool to have a bad ass sniper dude with great balance and super-fast reflexes at my disposal, he's apparently also insane which might be problematic. The super-strong FBI agent would most likely be a great help when it came to kicking down doors or heaving SUVs at the shambling throngs of undead, but zombies are really something you should deal with using distance weapons. And the technomancer guy with an Autism Spectrum Disorder would be pretty much useless after the power goes out. Unfortunately the two female team members would be even worse, since the one who can make people do her bidding requires her target to have a functioning brain, and the one who can have one super sense at a time would be standing still a lot, which is just an invitation to be lunch.

But they'd still be better than nothing. Hopefully.

On the other hand, my most recent post also mentioned the Hawaii 5-0 reboot. Hell, Steve and Kono could probably take on the entire zombie hoard by themselves.

Psst! I've filled my first prompt square for my [livejournal.com profile] hc_bingo card! \o/ Check it out!
taste_is_sweet: (Imagination Movers!)
Because I first read about this on [livejournal.com profile] ariadnes_string's LJ and then saw that [livejournal.com profile] alyse and all the other cool kids were doing it, I've decided to sign up for [livejournal.com profile] hc_bingo.

This might seem like an exercise in futile insanity (I'd say 'whimsical insanity' but I don't do whimsy), but it's not, I swear! I have a plan.

The first part of the plan is to take merciless advantage of the fact that you don't have to fill in the entire card to succeed at this thing and that you can also take an entire year to do it. The second part of the plan is to use the prompts as inspiration for original fic*, because one can never have too much inspiration and if I do this right I might just end up with a collection of stories I can either try to get into professional anthologies or self-publish on Amazon.com.

I'm stoked about this, I have to say. Pretty much everything I write turns into H/C eventually, and I'm already having a great time thinking of how I can use some of these prompts to help expand vignettes I've written into full novellas or novels. Heck, nearly the whole card seems tailor-made for the Pape and Danforth thing I've been poking at. Well, maybe not the "Archaic Medicine"... (ETA: Naturally the first one I filled was "Archaic Medicine".)

Anyway, here's my card under the cut. Pretty cool, huh? Except the "Poltergeist" prompt, because ghosts kind of freak me out.

My hc_bingo card )

*Except for the SGA fanfic I'm going to write for [livejournal.com profile] raphe1 because of her winning and extremely awesome bid at [livejournal.com profile] help_japan.
taste_is_sweet: (Pills)
For them's what might be interested, there is a multi-fandom commentfic meme going on at [livejournal.com profile] ariadnes_string's LJ (don't know her, but the woman has good ideas).

This particular meme is all about fevers, which as we all know tend to be awesome in fiction and kind of horrible in real life. (My mom got Dengue fever right after a Habitat for Humanity trip to Haiti many, many years ago, and at one point her poor brain was so fried that she honestly thought she'd been a victim of a voodoo curse. Definitely not fun to witness at the time.)

I've gone through all the comment prompts and read almost all of the finished fic(lets), and I've been grinning like the wicked, H/C junkie fangirl that I am. Except for one little thing that I just don't get.

So far, every writer who's actually said what temperature the suffering, delirious woobie has reached has written it as being no higher than 102 Fahrenheit (about 38.9 Celsius). Now, I've had a fever that high and let me say in no uncertain terms that it sucks balls, but that's nowhere near high enough to cause delirium.

Generally, people don't start hallucinating or thinking they've been cursed until their fever hits 104 F (40 miserable degrees Celsius). Temperatures of 105 (40.5) and up are where you drag your raging teammate outside into the blizzard so you can bury him in snow before the brain and organ damage starts.

Now, it is true that the faster a person's temperature rises, the more likely they are to have febrile seizures. But a normally climbing fever that gets to 102/38.9 will probably make you want to die, but it won't make you see the Grim Reaper and his flying monkeys coming through the window to help you get right on that. There's a good rule-of-thumb chart right here.

Obviously not everyone will react to a higher-than-normal body temperature in the same way, but it still struck me as odd that a temperature 102/38.9 would be considered dangerous. Have any of you guys had different experiences? Am I wrong? Enlighten me, FList! :D (Passes out the Tylenol and Paracetamol.)

Stolen from [livejournal.com profile] desert_rose, though I'm sure it's been everywhere:

Dear Santa...

Dear Santa,

This year I've been busy!

In January I committed genocide... Sorry about that, [livejournal.com profile] debris_k (-5000 points). In June I got in line at the supermarket at the same time as someone else and I didn't yield (-8 points). Last Sunday I ruled Canada as a cruel and heartless dictator (-700 points). Last Friday I ruled Iran as a kind and benevolent dictator (700 points). In November I saved a busload of nuns in Angola (326 points).

Overall, I've been naughty (-4682 points). For Christmas I deserve a lump of coal!

Sincerely,

You are The High Priestess

Science, Wisdom, Knowledge, Education.

The High Priestess is the card of knowledge, instinctual, supernatural, secret knowledge. She holds scrolls of arcane information that she might, or might not reveal to you. The moon crown on her head as well as the crescent by her foot indicates her willingness to illuminate what you otherwise might not see, reveal the secrets you need to know. The High Priestess is also associated with the moon however and can also indicate change or fluxuation, particularily when it comes to your moods.

What Tarot Card are You?
Take the Test to Find Out.

I think I'm a bit too erratic to really fit this--though the mercurial mood thing certainly works for me--but hey, I like it! I used to be able to read Tarot cards, too. Wish I could still do that.

I'm fairly certain that I will eventually post some pictures from my trip to Portugal in July....

Anyway, [livejournal.com profile] chkc tagged me for this. I have always feared and loathed my handwriting, but I also actually enjoy writing stuff by hand on occasion, so I figured I might as well do it.

I had to use the camera because my husband's scanner is broken. That's why some of the edges are missing. Nothing important was lost aside from some closed brackets and the 'N' at the end of Rammstien, which I'm probably still not spelling right.

I seem to be very wordy regardless of the medium. This is perhaps not surprising. )

These are the questions:

1) What's your online name?
2) What are your current favourite singer(s) or band(s)?
3) Stuff you ♥ (draw the heart!).
4) Favourite person of all time.
5) Who is your newest favourite person?
6) Tag six people (I cheated by tagging six and two as a bonus).

So, here's how it goes:

[livejournal.com profile] wpadmirer Picked out the following six icons so I would tell everyone why I have them. If you want to play, just tell me in the comments and I'll pick out six of your icons so you can post about why you have them, too. :) Spread the icon love!
