Today, my son had a dentist appointment to cap two of his teeth. (Unfortuly, as he would say, when he began to brush his teeth without supervision he stopped brushing his side teeth, so he got cavities. Now his daddy has to floss Jav's teeth because I refuse to.) After the dentist put in the bling he told us to feed him a liquid lunch so he wouldn't accidentally gnaw on his numbed chipmunk-cheeks, so we decided just to keep him home for the afternoon. This meant a lot of parent-approved children's television, including Curious George (who is a Chimpanzee, not a monkey, damn it. And don't even get me started on that poacher, the Man in the Yellow Hat). One of the episodes featured doughnuts, so naturally Javier and I got a craving and we decided to make some together.

Since I've never made doughnuts before, I decided to try this recipe online, because it seemed simple, and I was sure Javier would enjoy rolling out the dough and cutting out circle shapes.

But, as is unfortunately a regular occurrence for me when trying out new recipes, it didn't work. Jav and I followed the recipe exactly, but instead of getting dough thick enough to roll we ended up with something a lot more like pancake batter.

'Okay,' I thought, 'we'll just make beignets.' Beignets are doughnut-like fried dough they make in New Orleans and serve with heaps of powdered sugar, which makes them both delicious and a suffocation hazard. But to make them all we had to do was drop the batter by tablespoonfuls into the hot oil.

This is what we ended up with:

Crappy Doughnuts

They were far more like fried pancakes than beignets (and yes, I have a terrible time frying anything. The first time I ever tried I came close to burning the house down), and even though you're meant to serve beignets warm, these tasted pretty awful.

Undaunted...well, somewhat daunted, I dumped sprinkled sugar on them and hoped for the best. And, perhaps unsurprisingly, once they cooled down they tasted like fried pancakes. But good fried pancakes. I think Javier ate half of them all by himself.

Then he went to his room and made his own subway line, complete with maps and turnarounds:

Javier's Subway

Because he is awesome.

Now he's high on sugar and running around the house naked making (actual) monkey noises, but at least his cheeks look normal again.

Here's his mouth full of bling:

Mouth Full of Bling

I'm sure there's some great message here about perseverance, spoonfuls of sugar or taking better care of your teeth or something, but I'm a little distracted right now with trying to get Jav to get into PJs and to brush his teeth. All of them.

Ah...sugar highs and children. Always an interesting, if not restful combination. (grin)

*grins*

I'm glad that the not-doughnut doughnuts turned out in the end. The absolute easiest way to make them (for future reference) is to buy a pack of biscuit dough in the tube, heat up some grease, punch a hole in each round of dough and drop them in. Turn once so that they're golden brown on both sides, pull them out and cover them in either cinnamon sugar or powdered sugar. My mom makes them every year for Thanksgiving morning. :D

Good luck catching Javier. Kids on sugar have super speed.

He finally wound down, thank you. ::g::

That does sound super-easy! Though buying the dough would feel like cheating. (Yes, I'm strange. But you know that.) I'll just have to find a better recipe.
