Icons? Bewler?

So, I've got Photoshop Elements Seven, which is pretty much a lobotomized version of the original with a prettier interface. I'm still occasionally gnashing my teeth on the lack of such nifty things as blending styles options and curve layers, but I've produced some things I like and it's a fun thing to do that lets me be kind of artistic without actually having to be able to, you know, do art.

Anyway, it occurred to me today that even though I've got this nifty problem child of a graphics program I haven't actually been making any icons with it. I think the problem is that while there are large, wallpaper-type pictures I'd like to make, I haven't had any inspiration for anything icon-sized.

Therefore, my creative and generous FList, I turn to you.

I will make icons for anyone commenting with a picture/screencap/etc. or a link to same that they would like to have as an icon. If there's anything specific you'd like along with the picture (darker, lighter, just the top of Callum Keith Rennie's fluffy head, particular words, that kind of thing), please add that as well.

And then I will make you an icon! I can't promise that you'll like it, or tell you when you might get it, exactly, but I will make something for you. :D Hopefully something that you'll like, even!

Right. I'll just be over here, then, whistling.

I don't have any links to caps (still riding the dial-up collection of much woe and dreadful slowness) but I'd love to have nu(Spock/Kirk) icon - anything goes as long as the boys are recognizable and look slashy together, which for those two isn't much of a stretch. ;-)

I have this pic I've been trying unsuccessfully to make into an icon--I just don't have the skills for it.

I don't remember the original source for it but I could send it to you if you don't mind. John has such a dorky look on his face (and I have been trying to label him as 'doofus' and Rodney is looking at him with exasperation--I wanted his side to say 'loves him anyway'. But my attempts to add text and resize it for an icon leave me with something illegible.

Sadly, I don't really know how to embed a photo in a comment box (my LJ skills are still under development after all this time)

I think I might have had the same problem as you with illegible text at one point. Have you tried cropping and resizing the picture before adding the text? That's what I was doing wrong, and the text always shrunk to illegibility when I finally shrunk the icon. Indeed, all the icon tutorials suggest resizing the picture before making any changes to it.

I use that too, but it's either extremely limited, or I just never figured out how to make it do anything...

You can get Photoshop Elements Seven for about $35.00 US, and that's what I use, or you could do a search for GIMP, which is a free program that apparently compares favourable to Photoshop, though I've never used it. There are tutorials for GIMP, however.
