I got my new [livejournal.com profile] hc_bingo card (do-dah; do-dah). It looks promising. And painful.

Here! It's under here! )

I have an idea that would fill the 'pneumonia' prompt, as well as two other prompts from different challenges, but my heart is with my original novels-in-progress at the moment. I would also love to be able to work all 25 prompts into one story, but the 'magical trouble' doesn't quite fit. ('Difficult pregnancy' might be a problem as well, come to think of it.)

I'm sure that once again I won't have anything finished before the point-less (but not pointless, heh) amnesty period, but this will be fun anyway. And if I'm really lucky, maybe I'll be inspired to write something that gets published. YOU NEVER KNOW.

(My previous two cards are here for 2011 and here for 2012.)

[Poll #1910872]

(The novel involves magic-users and kingdoms and blood sacrifice. In case it wasn't obvious.)

Thanks, Flisties! Your help is much appreciated. Sometimes I hate having to name novels even more than writing summaries.

I had the lovely experience of being able to share Peter Jackson's Lord of the Rings trilogy with my son last week. I hadn't watched any of the movies since The Return of the King came out in 2003 (It's been ten years? Really? Wow), so I had almost as much fun as the Jav reacquainting myself with the story and the beautiful actors production design.
Beautiful production design (Actor Karl Urban)

But--and there always is one--watching the movies reminded me of some of the things that had confused me the first time.

I still think the eagles should have given Frodo a lift to Mordor. Just saying. )

I've got another published story coming out! And it has a cat in it!

It's Gordon's Cat in the anthology Don't Try This At Home from Dreamspinner Press. I'm writing as Aundrea Singer.

Gordon's Cat is my third story published by Dreamspinner. The others are Skunk, Bryan, Spoon (and a Badger) in Necking, and A Fairy in his Bed (which I wrote with my sister [livejournal.com profile] squeakyoflight) in Myths and Magic: Legends of Love.

Don't Try This At Home is a collection of lighthearted stories about all the little things that can go wrong in relationships, especially the sex part of relationships. My story was inspired by the 'angry cat' in the anthology description, and the cat in the story is very loosely based on my mom's first cat, Pusscat.

Pusscat was a big, ornery black-and-white tom who adopted my mom one night by climbing through her New York apartment window. He was one of those stubborn, opinionated and truly awesome cats that only come along a few times in an owner's lifetime. My mom wrote a song about him:

Meow, meow, meow, Pusscat!
Meow, meow, meow, Pusscat!
Meow, meow, meow, Pusscat!
Meow, meow, meow!

Well, it wasn't a good song, but it was fun to sing when I was three. I also enjoyed chasing Pusscat down the hallway, which wasn't very nice. But he almost clawed one of my eyes out in retaliation, so I'd say we're even.

As you can probably guess, when my mom brought my dad home the first time, Pusscat wasn't happy about it. Pusscat would delight in jumping on my dad's back, claws first, when he and my mom were...talking, and Pusscat would only sharpen his nails on my dad's very expensive leather furniture. In revenge, my dad would sneak up on Pusscat while he was mid-scratch, and whack him in the butt with a rolled-up newspaper. Apparently all the adrenaline cured Pusscat of his kidney stones.

Pusscat went to his greater reward while I was still a child, but he's forever immortalized in silly songs and embarrassing anecdotes, so it was a natural for me to base Chelsea, Gordon's cat, on him.

I'll post my usual free-ebook contest next week when the book is released on October 8. In the meantime, here's an excerpt of the upcoming story:

Harper Voyager to Accept Unagented Manuscripts for Two Weeks

I don't think I can take advantage of this--I have an agent, and he couldn't sell the one manuscript I had finished. Not to mention that it's the same novel I realized kind of sucks.

So unfortunately, no. Probably not for me. But I'm happy to pass on the opportunity. :D

I just had someone die horribly in the novel I'm writing. On page six. Of a fantasy novel. At least it wasn't a main character. And I'm probably going to kill someone else by page ten.

I thought I'd share because I'm a little shocked that my attempt at having something exciting after a history!yay! prologue ended up with death and mayhem about three pages into chapter one.

Yay?

And it's been over two months since I last posted, apparently. Oops.

Anyway! Here's my brand new [livejournal.com profile] hc_bingo card. I'm really happy with some of the prompts, though I have absolutely nothing in mind for any of them at the moment. I'm open for suggestions. :)

My last year's bingo card is here, if anyone's interested. Overall, I was quite happy with what I was able to come up with.

And here's my new one:

Tentacles body/mindswap alien abduction dystopia amnesia
Apocalypse nightmares heat stroke stalkers poisoning
Theft major illness WILD CARD cursed arrest
Body Image Issues dub-con sex pollen abuse kidnapping
Insomnia parting ways bites love spell / potion gone wrong bruises

I put my original fic, Seeds up on AO3. If you'd like to read it, you can find it here.

And yes, I would love it if you read it. But no one is obliged. :)

It's another Friday, and now that my awesome sister and her super cool family have gone back to the enviously balmy Canada, I've had a chance to finish this latest fill for my [livejournal.com profile] hc_bingo.

Title: The Winter Dragon
Length: 2,538 Words
Rating: PG (For blood and mention of wounds)
Warnings: None that I can think of
HC_Bingo Square: Ostracized from society (Bingo card is here. Apparently I'm going for two horizontal bingos, which has nothing to do with how I still haven't thought of anything for 'coma' or 'bruises'.)

As you can probably tell, this is fantasy and will probably be the first part of a novel or novella at some point. Eventually. I've got two other novels to finish first.

Enjoy, and thank you very much for reading. :D

Look at me! I wrote something!

Back in March I posted the first 500 or so words of an original story I'd started years before and never gotten around to continuing. And now, because of my [livejournal.com profile] hc_bingo card, I realized it would fit one of the prompts perfectly and give me a reason to finish it.

And now it's finished. :D

Title: Seeds
Length: 2704 words
Rating: R (for violence)
Warnings: May squick
HC_Bingo Square: Archaic Medicine (Bingo card is here.)

Summary: No one can outrun the wind.

She twisted her foot in the earth and a flat piece of bone came up, dug out of the soil. )

Thank you very much for reading. :) Only four more squares to go!

I started this years ago, and never got around to finishing it. I reread it again tonight and decided it's still pretty cool, so I thought I'd post it. Maybe it will help me actually figure out the ending. :)

Don't miss your chance to win a book with one of my stories in it! You have until Friday, Dec. 17. Just leave me a comment telling me a strange story!

While I'm here shilling my anthology stories, I also wanted to mention that both anthologies have already been given favourable reviews. I was really happy to see that the review of the Myths and Magic anthology mentioned the story I wrote with Corinna Silver ([livejournal.com profile] squeakyoflight). I won't lie--I would've enjoyed a brief summary as some of the other stories in the anthology got, but considering how many stories there are in Myths and Magic, the reviewer specifically adding, "I could go on about more stories like the one about the fairy..." (which Corinna and I wrote) was pretty darn cool. The complete review for the anthology is here.

I also want to tell you about two really excellent promotions going on at Dreamspinner Press right now. Not only can you get 20% off all purchases between now and the end of the year by using the code HolidayDreams at checkout, but they also have a wonderful contest going on:

This year let Dreamspinner make your eBook dreams come true. Each day from Dec. 26- Dec. 31, we will draw one name from the customers that purchased during the month of December to win every eBook on their wish list.

You'll need to register to make a wish list, but it's easy to register and making a wish list is fun. :D

The review for Tesseracts 14 didn't say more than, 'recommended', but for a first review anywhere that's pretty darn cool too, I'd say. :) My story in this anthology is "The Pickup". The review, which includes a nice plot summary for each of the stories in the anthology, can be found here.

Come over and enter the contest! Time's running out!

I'll admit it--I should have done this at least a month ago, but I always feel weird about metaphorically yelling LOOK AT ME! LOOK AT ME! and waving my arms like mad from the back of the room. However, it is true that some of you might like to know about this, so:

LOOK! LOOK! I HAVE TWO NEW STORIES OUT!

Lots of links ahead! )

Now the contest!

Last time I had a free book contest I chose the winner from the first person who commented with their name and address. This time I'm going to be a little more creative. The theme for Tesseracts 14 is "Strange Canadian Stories". In honor of that, one trade paperback copy of the Tesseracts 14 anthology will go to the person who, in my most humble opinion, comments with the niftiest anecdote about a real-life strange thing that's happened to them. The runner up will receive a trade paperback copy of the Myths and Magic anthology. (This isn't because I think the Tesseracts 14 book is better than Myths and Magic, but because I only have one Tesseracts 14 book to give away.)

The next two runners up will each get an eBook copy of the Myths and Magic anthology (unfortunately, Tessaracts 14 is only available in trade paperback format).

Awright! Anyone got a strange story to tell me? :D

Yes, I'm desperate enough to resort to polling. It also saves from having to go back and pick at the same damn paragraph yet again for another few minutes.

(The icon's picture has nothing to do with the story. I'm using it because my name for it is 'this will end badly', which is surprisingly appropriate.)

The theme this week was "Happiness in a Bottle". I went with the very mordant comedy sketch, which you can see here. I admire how Bill Cosby can be so gentle about something while still portraying it in all its pathos and horror.

This story is a sequel to Only the Skin. It's a little over 2000 words. I hope you enjoy it. :)

I made it past round one! I am gleeful! Actually, I am thrilled and amazed and all kinds of wonderful things. I want to thank again everyone who liked my vignette enough to vote for me. I hope people enjoy this one as well.

Nobody dies this time. I promise. But there is a lot of blood.

This round's prompt was "Eternal". And such is my head that the first thing I thought was, 'well, what is eternal?', which instantly made me think of this song and laugh probably more than the pun truly warranted.

It also got me thinking about The Cask of Amontillado ("FOR THE LOVE OF GOD, MONTRESOR!"), because of the last line: "For the half of a century no mortal has disturbed them", though it turns out I'd misremembered it for nearly thirty years as, "They haven't been disturbed for centuries!", alas. And then I moved on to such things that could be considered eternal, like angels. Hence the really cool icon.

After gakking the really cool icoon, I started thinking about other possible meanings of 'Eternal', and came up with things that don't change. And then I began wondering what the opposite of that would be, and decided that it had to be finite, or mutable. And then I wrote this:

Only the Skin )
