At this rate I probably will write an entire anthology of miserable stories whether I want to or not. The Train is not a happy thing, but extremely inspiring.
I was thinking something very similar about the narrator, that she has to be the one to let go before the boy can be free.
Last year in Quebec, there was a news story about a young man who drowned because the canoe his girlfriend and he were in tipped over. Apparently he gave her his life vest, and later he drowned. I don't know why there was only one available life vest, but I was thinking about that story when I wrote this one. The narrator's guilt would certainly keep the boy with her, even if she wasn't aware that was the reason.
