Any of my Flisties out there with a sci-fi or fantasy novel ready to go?

Harper Voyager to Accept Unagented Manuscripts for Two Weeks

I don't think I can take advantage of this--I have an agent, and he couldn't sell the one manuscript I had finished. Not to mention that it's the same novel I realized kind of sucks.

So unfortunately, no. Probably not for me. But I'm happy to pass on the opportunity. :D

Have you seen any of the postings about [livejournal.com profile] fan2originalfic?

It's a new com that might be of interest to you anyway and they'd probably be really interested in this.

The thing that gives me some pause about this is that it's digital-only, and I can't find any information about advances or royalties on the FAQ part of the website. It kinda feels like they're trying to lure in authors with the HarperCollins name while not really offering that much value for it, at least no more than you could get from any small epublisher. (But maybe I'm just being cynical.)

You probably aren't. I'm sorry that I didn't go to the HC website myself, but I was just thinking about letting other people know asap. I didn't know that it was only for a digital arm. That is the future of publishing, but you might as well either publish yourself or go with an already established ebook publisher.

I hope my comment didn't sound scolding. I first saw a link to this a few days ago, and I was excited 'til I started poking around the website and thinking that it sounds like much less of a good deal than it seems at first glance.

On the other hand, if the digital + print arms of HarperCollins talk to each other, it might end up being a good way to get an "in" at the company -- if one were able to, say, establish a good working relationship with a HarperCollins editor. So it's certainly not a total wash. I just wish they were more up-front about their contract terms, and it makes me really uncomfortable that the site is all "Yay! Opportunity!" without giving details.

(Pfft, deleted and reposted because I accidentally replied to the entire post rather than your comment. *facepalm*)

No worries about the delete/repost! And you didn't sound scolding, either. I just felt goofy for not having actually read the details before going all, 'yay!' about it on my LJ.

I still have a feeling that you've got the right of it--that HC is going for people they can exploit for little to no money to establish their own ebook line. But yes, it might be a good way in.

OTOH, if they're not offering advances or much in the way of royalties, you might as well self-publish. At least you get a larger percentage. :)
