Cool. I've never really been to Portugal, they weren't hight on the list of "friendly to US military personnel" when I was in the area, so...
I'm also intrigued by the almost toy-like quality to European appliances like fridges, ovens and washers. I just chalked it up to the idea that most Europeans seemed to shop often and in small quantities. The shelf stable UHT milk I actually liked, once I'd refrigerated it. (I still call it "ooot" milk; I found out my kids actually thought there was an animal by that name that gave special milk!)
The shutters! I had those on my ground floor apartment. I must say I felt very secure when they were down. I am surprised the windows didn't do that thing where they open from all sides so you could crack the top and leave the bottom closed.
Sounds like you had a wonderful time. Look at that little cutie patootie. He's really growing fast.
