There was nothing about this in the manual

One of my favourite memories from when my sister's kids were even smaller than they are now (I think the girl was two and a half or so, the boy not even a year), was being on the phone with my sister and hearing her suddenly say to her daughter, "stop putting stickers on your brother!"

Oh, how I laughed. I mean, we agreed later that neither of us would have ever thought we'd be saying that to anyone in a million billion years. Obviously children will always, always surprise you.

Well, I didn't think much would beat the 'don't sticker your brother' admonishment until this morning, when I had to tell Jav to stop licking the sole of his shoe.

O.o

Nope, never saw that one coming. And I have to admit I was so horrified at the idea that my 'NO! NOOOOO!' scared him. But seriously--licking your shoe? Who does that?

Three year-olds, apparently. Wow. I can almost see the attraction. Almost. Well, not really.

I explained exactly why I freaked the hell out (amidst much cuddling), and hopefully he won't do it again. ::shudders::

Some days I dread how he'll astound me next....

*shrug*

Mud could be crumbly cookies, you never know.

There wasn't enough to be crumbly, really--just a light coating of dirt. And he had already swiped a wet swath up the middle with his tongue when I realized what he was doing.

I think he just wanted to see what it would taste (feel?) like. He's licked the equipment at the playground, too.

Ahaha, I used to do that too. I liked the smell of metal so it should taste good too, right?

I love kids. "...I KNOW!" *licks shoe*

No doubt you feel badly for scaring him, but it's for the best, I imagine. When I scared my parents, I never did that thing again out of fear of their reaction. Parents aren't supposed to get scared! So if you were scared, it must be a really bad thing to do, right?

That is true. Only, I scared him, unfortunately. I also pissed him off huge, which he certainly had a right to be.

I probably licked metal when I was a kid, too. I also loved the smell of car exhaust. And apparently when my sister and I were toddlers we ate dirt with chicken poop in it. Really, it's a wonder I made it to adulthood.

Hahaha. These should go in a quote collection. "Lines I Never Thought I'd Have to Use" or something.

Ewwww, shoe-licking! No wonder you freaked out a little, although it is hilarious to read it like that. Kids!

Yeah, I hope I'll be able to remember them!

It's far more hilarious now than it was at the time, believe me. :) But yes, I knew I'd want to keep that moment.

Emrys chews on his shoes if he gets half the chance, but he's only one and he's teething, so I guess that's more understandable. I hope he doesn't do it when he's actually walking - people let their dogs relieve themselves everywhere here, and no one cleans up, so I dread to think what he might pick up on his shoes. Argh.

Oh, yes. The world becomes an absolute cesspool when you have to think about your kids touching things and then putting their fingers in their mouths. Or licking shoes.

I was thinking of you when I wrote this, as a matter of fact. :) Javier used to chew his shoes as well, for the same reason, but this was purely experimental. On the other hand, Javier really doesn't like poo of any kind and will actively avoid it, so hopefully he wouldn't lick a shoe that smelled like it.

I hope Emrys isn't the same kind of curious, or that he doesn't want to be near poo either, when he's old enough to be walking around.
